Gaharo Hill is located in Gitega Province, in central Burundi. Coffee is grown here between 1,700 and 2,100 meters above sea level. As in much of the country, the primary variety cultivated is Red Bourbon. Introduced during the Belgian colonial period in the 1930s, coffee production remains a vital source of income for hundreds of thousands of Burundian families today. In 2025, 814 producers delivered coffee cherries from Gaharo Hill.
Bukeye is the first washing station established by Long Miles Coffee, Osito’s local partner in Burundi. It is also the birthplace of the Coffee Scouts programme, which provides year-round agronomic support and training to coffee producers. Among the initiatives implemented are biological control methods against antestia bugs, an insect associated with the potato defect, as well as pruning, mulching and fertilisation programmes designed to improve tree health and coffee quality.
This coffee immediately stood out to us for its crisp acidity and soft texture, making it an ideal filter roast. In the cup, the coffee is clean and comforting, with indulgent notes of dulce de leche, stewed plum and a vibrant red fruit freshness.
Our import partner Osito was founded in 2018 by José Jadir Losada and Kyle Bellinger. The project grew out of a meeting between the two four years earlier in Garzón, Colombia. Since then, Osito has built direct sourcing relationships with coffee producers across seven origins, including Burundi since 2019.
Their approach is centred on long-term trading relationships, built around fixed-price contracts that sit above the market price and remain independent from its day-to-day fluctuations. Osito also commits to purchasing multiple quality tiers from each producer, helping support entire harvests rather than focusing solely on the most sought-after microlots.
